I am wondering, can i possibly use some word instead of he/she and his/her which will provide the same meaning? 7 i have gone to using their instead of the increasingly awkward him/her in all but the most formal of my writings. Why on earth would the singular 'they' be frowned upon by professors.
I would always use it to achieve gender neutrality. Each student should save his questions until the end. He/she must also provide his/her result card with his/her form.
I have seen many authors use female pronouns (i.e. “she” and “her”), but lately this trend seems to have ebbed somewhat. His or her is sounding very contrived, and it is no better to substitute her for him. Should i use his or his/her in the following sentence?
She likes him and his dog. As his was rejected by native speakers, his or her became more popular in formal writing. He can use it from a phone or even from his tablet. They was seen as incorrect, or at least informal, by many writers.
The user can determine his name.
